I was on the phone the other day with friend from back home. He asked me, “So are things there really as bad there as the news makes it out to be?” My answer: Absolutely, but the news doesn’t do it justice. Now, the area I live in is fine. There are only a few reminders of Ike’s visit but the coastal areas are devastated. I got to go down last week to work in Galveston and, if i didn’t know better, I would say that Ike came through just a few days before. You could still see the waterline marks on the walls - they were around 8 feet high.
I went down with almost 40 volunteers from our congregation (several teens and members of all ages) and got to do clean up at one location. The local congregation, along with a disaster relief group, fed over 500 people (as they do every day) at their location. Just to give you an idea, I have tacked on some pics of the clean-up work. These really don’t even give a good scope of the damage. Picture this but for miles and miles. Keep praying for the folks there.
